Special Statement from Sheriff Clarke
April 11, 2021

The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office is an accredited agency that is responsible for law enforcement services to the citizens of Isle of Wight County.  Primary law enforcement services within the two incorporated towns of Smithfield and Windsor are provided by the Police Departments within the respective towns.

While we have a close working relationship with both agencies, responsibility for the day-to-day operations of each agency belongs to the Chief of Police, Town Manager, and local governing body of each of the towns.

Like many in our community and across the United States, I recently viewed the December 2020 video circulating on various media platforms involving officers of the Windsor Police Department.  When the matter is fully investigated, my hope is that justice and fairness will prevail.  I will state for the record - no deputies from the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office were present or in any way involved in this traffic stop.

The professional men and women of the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office have worked hard to build positive and constructive relationships with all who live, work, or visit our County.  We will continue to conduct ourselves in a manner that holds the public faith and trust as a priority.

It is with great pleasure that we provide the level of protection and service our citizens have come to expect from their Sheriff’s Office.

Serving with Honor,

James R. Clarke, Jr.
